Biotechnology BAS Specialization

The Biotechnology specialization in the Applied Health Sciences Bachelor of Applied Science degree is designed for students with a background in chemical technology, medical laboratory technology, chemistry or biotechnology, including students who have earned associate degrees in those fields from Eastern Florida State College. It builds upon a student's existing professional knowledge to enhance skills in communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and research and leadership theories. Graduates can expect to qualify for positions in fields such as clinical lab technologist, molecular biologist, research biologist, pharmaceutical research and sales, health economics promotion and laboratory animal technology.

The advanced science courses in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, lab animals and research methods focus on these disciplines in a laboratory environment, including quality assurance in the medical lab, biotechnology, biopharmaceutical and biomedical device industries.

The Biotechnology specialization admissions process follows the general bachelor's degree enrollment steps. The Biotechnology Specialization curriculum includes information this track's specific courses. Because of the hands-on science courses inherent in this specialization, courses are primarily offered on campus. Select classes may be available in a hybrid format, a combination of in-person and online coursework or fully online.

Completion of the following courses with a grade of “C” or better is suggested prior to entering this program:

• CHM (L) 1045 – General Chemistry 1 with lab
• CHM (L) 1046 – General Chemistry 2 with lab
• CHM (L) 2010 – Organic Chemistry 1 with lab
• CHM (L) 2011 – Organic Chemistry 2 with lab
• BSCC 1010 – General Biology 1
• BSCC 1011 – General Biology 2

These courses are prerequisites for several of the upper division courses in the program. It is not required that these be completed before entering the program however it is suggested in order to allow for a smoother transition into higher level classes and promotes a quicker path through the degree. The BAS degree programs are designed with the working student in mind so classes are offered in flexible formats to include day, evening, online and hybrid. The degree is also Financial Aid eligible. Students are admitted to the Biotechnology Sciences program in the Spring, Summer and Fall Terms.

Students who plan to pursue a graduate degree in pharmacy have an option to pursue additional education through the partnership between EFSC and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). Lake Erie offers an Early Acceptance Program for EFSC Applied Health Sciences - Biotechnology students interested in graduate studies at LECOM's School of Pharmacy.

This degree program is designed for students holding an A.S. degree, although an A.A. degree from a regionally accredited institution is also acceptable for admission. An Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree does not meet the minimum eligibility requirement for entry into this program. AAS degree holders who intend to transfer into the BAS program should consult with an academic advisor to review coursework and determine the best transfer options.
