Become an expert in Big Data

Data Science has been described as a high growth career field because of the increased utilization of experts who can analyze what's known as "Big Data" and help devise solutions based on that data for use throughout business, industry and government. Eastern Florida State College prepares students for mid-level positions in this expanding field through the Data Science specialization within the Computer Information Systems Technology Bachelor of Applied Science degree.

Students will gain a fundamental understanding of Data Science through courses that include Database Design and Architecture, Database Systems with Big Data, Data Mining, Numerical Analysis, Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis and an understanding of the key role of data security.

Potential career positions include Applied Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Big Data Analytics Engineer, Logistics Management Analyst, Resource Planning Analyst and Machine Learning Quantitative Engineer.

You can earn this degree while continuing to work thanks to flexible class formats that include on-campus day and  evening courses, some online courses and blended hybrid courses that are part classroom and part online. The degree is also Financial Aid eligible. Bachelor program courses can fill quickly so students need to register in a timely manner to ensure they have a seat for the on-campus and online course offerings that are part of their specialization. Work with your advisor as needed when planning and be sure to check the important term dates and student email for current information about registration start dates.

Students are admitted to the program in the Spring, Summer and Fall Terms following the general Bachelor's Degree online application process.

Before completing the data science specialization, students will need to earn a grade of "C" or higher in the two courses below. Students may have taken these before entering the program, but if not, an advisor can help with course planning.

  • COP 2334 - C++ Programming
  • STA 2023 - Statistics

An Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree does not meet the minimum eligibility requirement for entry into this program. AAS degree holders who intend to transfer into the BAS program should consult with an academic advisor to review coursework and determine the best transfer options.
