Meta-Majors: Find your pathway through an Academic Community
Meta-Majors may sound complicated but the concept is simple: they represent eight guided career pathways, identified by the State of Florida, as a way to group Florida state college academic programs by their career focus. At EFSC, we refer to these meta-major pathways as Academic Communities. You can choose an Academic Community that fits your interests and then review its degrees and certificates and their related courses that help you progress along that educational pathway toward a rewarding career.
Each Meta-Major/Academic Community has identified Gateway Courses in English and Mathematics — the first courses that provide transferable, college-level credit which allow students to progress in their program of study.
When Florida Legislators created the pathways concept, they also required that first-time-in college students meet with an advisor. While you may not know exactly what you want to major in, you may have a general idea, and the advisor can help you choose the right classes for your academic success. Advisors are available on all four Eastern Florida campuses to discuss Academic Communities, Meta-Majors and Gateway Courses and to help you review transfer institution requirements in case you plan to earn an Associate degree and then move on to a bachelor's program here at EFSC or through transfer to a University.
EFSC's Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree is a university parallel degree designed to facilitate transfer into a bachelor's program here at EFSC or a university. The A.A. degree is listed with each meta-major as its general education and elective courses can be customized to meet the prerequisite needs for an intended bachelor's degree. All A.A. degree-seeking students must declare an academic community on their admissions application. In addition to the info on this page, view this PDF handout, which can assist with making a selection based on your interests.
