Basic Program

Thank you for your interest in the EMT-Basic program at EFSC. All EMT classes are held on the Melbourne Campus. Class sizes are limited to 18 students. Come and join us for a fun, exciting and highly marketable career. Upon successful completion of the course, students earn an Applied Technology Diploma and are eligible to sit for the State of Florida (National NREMT) certification exam.

The Emergency Medical Technician Program is offered each semester, and it lasts one semester:

  • Day Class: Two days per week, Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 9 AM - 4 PM (Fall & Spring, 16 weeks) and 8 AM - 5 PM (Summer, 12 weeks)

  • Night Class: Three nights a week between Monday–Thursday from 6 - 10 PM. (Fall & Spring only, 16 weeks). The exact three days vary between semesters. A night class cannot be guaranteed unless we meet minimum enrollment. There are no night classes offered in the summer.

Clinical Hours: In addition to attending class each week, plan on dedicating 8-12 hours per week to complete your clinical hours. Clinical hours are completed in four main areas: a hospital, a private ambulance company (non-emergency patient transport), Brevard County Fire Rescue and a city fire department (911 first responders). This hands-on experience is a great way to understand the employment options for an EMT and to help you decide what path you want to take in your Emergency Medical Services career.   

EMT Application Steps

Step 1:  Review Application Steps, Check Deadlines & Important Meeting Dates

Since this is a limited access program with a special application process, it is important for prospective students to understand that there are application deadline dates and mandatory meeting dates. All interested persons should read the information provided here in the EMT Application Steps prior to applying for the program.

Public Safety Institute EMT Program Dates & Application Deadlines

Note: Applications must be submitted by midnight on the deadline date. Late applications cannot be accepted.

  • Spring Term 2024 Start (January 2024) - Deadline to Apply: October 15, 2023
  • Summer Term 2024 (May 2024) - Deadline to Apply: March 10, 2024
  • Fall Term 2024 (August 2024) - Deadline to Apply: June 9, 2024
  • Spring Term 2025 Start (January 2025) - Deadline to Apply: October 13, 2024

Step 2:  Apply for General Admission to Eastern Florida State College

Complete and properly submit the application for general admission to Eastern Florida State College. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee for admission that must be submitted at the time of application to the college. This application is available online. Complete all general admissions requirements with the main EFSC Admissions office.

Please note that application processing can take up to 14 days due to the current volume of applications. Check your email frequently for your acceptance letter.

NOTE: This step pertains ONLY to those students who are not currently enrolled with the college. If you’re a returning/readmit student who applied to EFSC one or more years ago and have not completed a course in the past year, you must re-apply and can do so online and will not be charged the general EFSC application fee.

Step 3:  New & Existing EFSC Students: Complete General Requirements & Check for Registration Holds

If you are a new EFSC student, your general admissions acceptance letter and email will list admissions requirements that you must complete to avoid holds that would prevent you from registering for courses if accepted into the EMT program. You can also review how to complete these general requirements on EFSC's accepted students' page.

If you are an existing EFSC student, you need to verify that you do not have any holds that would prevent course registration if you are accepted into the program. Visit the Registration Holds webpage for details on how to check your EFSC Message Center for holds and how to clear them.

Step 4:  Complete Online Application for EMT Program

After you have received your general EFSC Admissions Acceptance letter or if you are a current EFSC student, complete the online Public Safety Institute Application. Your general admissions acceptance letter will include your Student ID number and password required to access your myEFSC account so you can log in and submit the limited access Public Safety application. The limited access application is in addition to the general application and MUST be properly submitted by midnight on the date of the application deadline.

There is a $25 non-refundable fee for the Public Safety application which can be paid through your myEFSC online account or at a campus Student Accounts Business Office no later than the application deadline.

Step 5:  Group Intake Meeting Info & Dates

EMS staff will contact applicants for each upcoming term with an invitation to attend a mandatory Group Intake Meeting. We provide the intake meeting dates by term to assist you with planning, but you must be invited to attend the meeting once we've reviewed your application.

It is the applicant's responsibility to monitor their email Inbox/Spam folder to RSVP to their meeting invitation. The invitation will contain a reminder on the date, plus the time and location and other important meeting details.

This meeting is mandatory and students will be notified of acceptance decisions following this Intake Meeting.

Step 6:  Orientation Info & Dates

Students will be notified following the Intake Meeting via Titan Email if they have been provisionally accepted into the program. Those students must attend the Orientation.

We provide the Orientation dates by term to assist you with planning in case your application should lead to provisional acceptance.

Final program acceptance will depend on the completion of orientation paperwork which includes the medical exam, immunizations, acceptable results of a required background check and drug screening, along with making sure your EFSC admissions and registration holds are resolved.
